Education

I graduated with a 4.0 from the Southern University of Illinois - Edwardsville in 2005 with a Master's of Elementary Education degree. My primary area of study was reading. I also earned a Bachelor's degree from University of Missouri - St. Louis in Music Education. Other educational institutions I've attended include Washington University in St. Louis, MO and Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville, IL.

Experience

I have 33 years of tutoring experience (in addition to approximately 25 years of classroom teaching experience in pre-school through college). About 10 years ago, I left classroom teaching to pursue 1:1 teaching. I feel many children are "slipping through the cracks" in the classroom and benefit from having individual attention. Many of my current clients have opted for homeschooling. I teach K-8 social studies, science, and English/Language Arts, math through Algebra I, and K-Adult reading. One of the choices you have when working with me is regarding the use of curriculum. Some clients prefer a specific curriculum so ask me to follow a curriculum provided by them. Other clients don't own a specific curriculum and prefer to turn over the curriculum choice to me. In this case, I use a variety of sources and create the curriculum myself. Other choices you have: who teaches and manages the grades up to and including turning an entire subject over to me to provide all content delivery and management; frequency and length of lessons; whether you want homework assigned and how much. We'll discuss these options during our initial FREE consultation. In addition, due to the nature of homeschooling, classes are offered as a package rather than by the hour. I also do remedial work with students who attend a traditional school. We work together to determine the cause(s) of the problems being seen at school then I prepare a learning plan that will outline steps we'll take to fill-in holes in knowledge and correct any other problems found. These lessons are generally 60 minutes long and we meet one or two times weekly.

Hobbies

I enjoy reading (my favorite activity). I like to read suspense and horror novels and informative text about anything of interest. At the moment, this includes books about whales, borderline personality disorder and reading improvement. I have two cats and I also enjoy most other animals. My cats are best buddies. In the warmer months, I enjoy water activities. I like to swim, boat and raft (white-water rafting is great!) I love to learn. I'm almost always taking some type of online class. Sometimes I just take classes in the subjects I teach to help me "stay on top of things". Other times, I like to learn about new topics. Recently, I began taking a class to learn more about using Microsoft Access. In recent years, I've developed a love for anything computer. I've gone back to school to learn about programming and databases. Along the way, I learned I really enjoy online poker (just for fun - no money).
